DEWALT POWERSTACK batteries have been developed using innovative pouch cell technology. While traditional batteries use cylindrical cells, the flat design of pouch cells results in less heat build-up and internal electrical resistance.

No. POWERSTACK batteries are fully compatible with our 18V XR range, so they’ll work with any 18V chargers you already own.
POWERSTACK batteries take a similar amount of time to charge as traditional cylindrical cell batteries.
Both POWERSTACK and XR FLEXVOLT batteries give you high-level performance when paired with our 18V tools. A 5AH POWERSTACK battery offers similar power levels to an 18V tool as an 6AH XR FLEXVOLT battery.
All our POWERSTACK batteries provide 2 x lifespan vs. comparable cylindrical cell batteries (for example, DCBP034 vs DBC183, DCB518 vs DCB184) and are supported by a 3-year extended warranty (subject to registration).
XR FLEXVOLT batteries can switch voltage up to 54V, enabling our higher-voltage XR FLEXVOLT power tools.
Pouch cells and cylindrical cells perform in different ways. Because the compact POWERSTACK battery delivers up to 50% more power than other compact batteries, it completes tough applications faster, using less energy overall. This results in more runtime compared to other compact batteries.
For example, on large diameter drilling (tested on a 45mm self-feed bit) with DCD800/5, a compact POWERSTACK battery will drill up to 95% more holes than our 2AH cylindrical cell battery.
POWERSTACK batteries are 18V and are compatible with all existing 18V XR chargers.
Charge times vary by charger. As an example, this battery will charge in 27 minutes on our DCB1104 charger.
The cell chemistry used in POWERSTACK batteries is lithium-ion – a different cell chemistry from graphene and lithium polymer. This latest generation of cell technology offers increased performance and lifespan vs. the traditional cylindrical cells.
The POWERSTACK battery offers improved thermal performance and can maintain higher voltages under load than a cylindrical cell battery, reducing the risk of swelling. Meaning this battery technology can perform better and last longer than a comparable cylindrical cell battery. As with all our products, our POWERSTACK batteries have passed a range of safety tests and undergone stringent quality control.
There are three levels of protection:
1. The tool module continually monitors a range of different readings from the battery.
2. The circuit board on the POWERSTACK battery provides additional layers of electronic protection.
3. The fuse has been specifically designed and tested for to prevent the circuit overloading.
